The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers (NIMechE), Abuja Chapter, successfully hosted its 14th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Conference on Friday, October 9, 2026. The event had “Smart-Shield: AI-Mechatronics for Autonomous National Security and Sustainability,” as themeĀ  served as a major platform for engineers, scholars, and industry leaders to discuss intelligent, adaptive systems tailored to Nigeria’s unique socio-economic and security challenges.

A prominent highlight of the event was the official induction of new student members from the newly established Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineering Student Chapter at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) in Abuja. The integration of AUST into the institutional fold signals a growing synergy between academia and professional bodies in championing home-grown technological solutions.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Steve Adeshina of Nile University presented an in-depth framework for the “Smart Shield” concept; a solar-powered, offline-capable, and human-supervised monitoring architecture designed to protect remote critical infrastructure such as oil and gas pipelines, agricultural belts, school campuses, and border corridors.

National Chairman Engr. Dr. Babagana Modu Tela and Abuja Chapter Chairman Engr. Adeyinka Adeyemi both emphasized that Nigerian engineers must transition from being mere technology consumers to active creators and innovators. Newly inducted students from AUST were challenged to harness their training in programming, robotics, and artificial intelligence to solve practical local problems while maintaining rigorous professional ethics and human oversight.

At the end of the conference, the consensus opinion among participants was that all hands must be on deck in combining multidisciplinary engineering expertise; spanning mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, Nigeria can successfully pioneer autonomous, reliable, and sustainable security solutions tailored by its own professionals.
