The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja and the National Identity Management Commission of Nigeria has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on joint research, professional training, innovation, knowledge exchange and the development of practical solutions in key areas of digital technology and institutional development.

The partnership follows nearly a year of discussions between both institutions to define the scope of cooperation and responsibilities. It provides a framework for joint research, laboratories, innovation challenges, fellowships, internships, executive education, staff exchanges, knowledge sharing, policy development, standards, prototypes and technology-driven operational solutions.

Speaking during the signing of the partnership agreement, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, President, AUST, said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) represents only the beginning of the collaboration. He noted that implementation would be driven by a joint technical team, with a focus on delivering measurable outcomes and practical institutional solutions.

Prof. Onwualu highlighted AUST’s recently approved programmes in artificial intelligence, data science, leadership and governance, information technology management, and policy and strategic studies, noting their relevance to NIMC’s mandate and growing responsibilities in data and digital identity management. He noted that NIMC staff, their spouse and biological children will be eligible for a 50 per cent discount on qualifying AUST bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes.

The AUST boss harped on the educational benefits available through the partnership, including discounted programme fees and opportunities for qualified NIMC staff to teach part-time in relevant programmes, online and virtual learning options, alongside weekend physical sessions for working professionals.

Mr. Alvan Ikoku, Director of Strategy and Programme Officer, NIMC, linked NIMC’s statutory mandate and digital identity infrastructure with AUST’s academic, research and technological capabilities. He noted that the partnership was designed to move beyond knowledge-sharing towards practical implementation through research, professional training, innovation and institutional development.

Representing the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NIMC, Engr. Dr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Mrs. Caroline Folami, Director of Research and Development, called for the formal signing of the MoU and reflected on the nearly year-long process that led to the agreement.

She applauded the efforts put in place that paved the way for this partnership and reiterated the determination of NIMC in fulfilling its part of the agreement.

Mrs Rhoda Jackden, Human Capital Management, NIMC, welcomed the educational discount and highlighted the importance of capacity development for NIMC staff and their families.

The AUST President was accompanied on the signing ceremony by Professor Abdulhakeem Bello, Acting Vice President, Academic; Prince Obioha Sampson Atulomah, Head, Media Services and Public Relations Unit, Mr Solomon Ibrahim, Procurement Officer/Personal Assistant to the President, and Ms Iweha Blessing, Administrative Assistant, Media and Public Relations Unit.

While Mrs Florence Olorantade; Mrs Azikiwe Felicia; Esther Pantuvo; Ali Baba; Onde M. Amali; Udeme H. Effanga; Ikpl Wofai Eteng; and Kayode Adzgore joined the DG/CEO representative, Mrs Caroline Folami on the memorable event.
