A student of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Temilola Akiode of the Department of Civil Engineering, has emerged First Runner-Up in the Essay Competition/Innovation Challenge organised as part of activities marking World Tourism Day 2026.

The competition brought together students from institutions across Abuja and featured essay writing, presentation and defence, providing participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, creativity and perspectives on the future of Nigeria’s tourism industry.

The competition was centred on the theme, “Leveraging Digital Innovation to Transform Nigeria’s Tourism Industry for Sustainable Economic Growth.”

The Ag. Head of Department, General Studies, Lizzy Asomugha, ACIArb, who mentored and led two AUST students for the competition, worked closely with the students virtually throughout the preparation and competition process, despite being away in the United States for the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).

Speaking on the achievement, Ms. Asomugha expressed her delight at seeing an AUST student compete confidently and achieve recognition at the competition. She described the accomplishment as a reflection of Temilola’s hard work, courage and commitment.

“Behind every award is a student who dared to believe, put in the work, and stepped forward to represent their institution with courage and excellence,” she said.

As part of the event, Ms. Asomugha also delivered a goodwill message on behalf of AUST, providing an opportunity to engage with participants and highlight the University’s values, academic offerings and opportunities for young people.

The interaction further provided an opportunity to promote AUST among prospective students and introduce young learners to the academic and developmental opportunities available at the University.Temilola’s achievement highlights AUST’s commitment to encouraging students to participate in academic and intellectual competitions while providing them with opportunities to develop confidence, creativity, leadership and practical knowledge beyond the classroom.
