The vital role of information technology professionals in sustaining modern education took centre stage as the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, celebrated Systems Administrator Appreciation Day, with the University reaffirming its commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure and supporting its ICT workforce.

In his keynote address, the President of AUST, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, paid glowing tribute to the University’s ICT personnel, describing them as the silent force behind the institution’s teaching, research and administrative operations.

“Behind every secure network is someone who has worked through the night to prevent disruptions,” the President said, noting that while their efforts often go unnoticed, they remain indispensable to the University’s daily operations.

Professor Onwualu emphasised that systems administrators are central to maintaining servers, networks, cybersecurity, cloud services and digital learning platforms. He assured staff of the University’s continued investment in modern ICT infrastructure, professional development and innovative technologies to support their work.

Earlier, the Head of ICT Mr. Abiodun Bidemi,  provided an overview of the University’s digital infrastructure, highlighting the evolution of internet connectivity from satellite services to fibre-optic technology, the rapid increase in network users, and the growing demand for reliable digital services across the campus. He also outlined challenges affecting internet stability, including fibre cuts caused by road construction, cable theft, right-of-way delays and power interruptions, while reaffirming the University’s commitment to maintaining dependable connectivity through improved monitoring systems and backup solutions.

Representatives of the University’s internet service provider(IPS), IDN Network Engineer, Mr. Chukwugozie Okekeze also explained the operational challenges involved in maintaining fibre-optic infrastructure, stressing that field engineers often respond around the clock to restore services despite security risks and infrastructure damage. They assured the University that measures are continually being strengthened to minimise downtime.

The interactive session featured contributions from staff across various departments. Participants proposed enhanced physical security for ICT facilities, wider deployment of RFID asset-tracking systems, and specialised ICT training for administrative and finance personnel to improve digital competence across the University. The ICT team welcomed the suggestions and pledged continued collaboration with departments through targeted capacity-building initiatives.

The event concluded with the President leading the University community in celebrating the dedication, resilience and professionalism of the ICT team, while encouraging staff and students to recognise the critical role systems administrators play in advancing AUST’s mission of excellence in science, technology and innovation.
