Two second-year Software Engineering students from the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Chinedu Okenyi, popularly known as Chiboy, and Isaac Itunbe, have been commended for their impressive contributions at the 33rd LAPO Annual Development Forum held in Abuja on 22 October 2026.
The forum, themed “Safe Water, Healthy Learning: Advancing WASH in Nigerian Schools”, brought together distinguished Nigerians and university students from across Abuja to discuss the importance of water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in Nigerian schools.
The students’ thought-provoking contributions, confidence and presentation skills earned them applause from participants, highlighting the capacity of AUST students to engage meaningfully in discussions on critical societal issues.
Commenting on their performance, the Head of the Department of General Studies at AUST, Liz Asomugha, expressed pride in the students, noting that their contributions reflected the potential she had observed in them as their teacher.
She emphasised that teaching extends beyond the classroom to nurturing minds, building confidence, encouraging critical thinking and equipping students with the skills to contribute meaningfully to society.
According to her, witnessing the students confidently articulate their ideas on such a platform was a fulfilling experience and a testament to the value of investing in students’ intellectual and personal development.
Their participation at the forum underscores AUST’s commitment to fostering critical thinking, effective communication and active engagement among its students, preparing them to contribute to national development and address pressing societal challenges.
The achievement is a proud moment for the University, demonstrating the impact of dedicated teaching and the growing capacity of its students to share their ideas and perspectives on platforms that shape public discourse.
