Strengthening Nigeria’s transition to sustainable energy took centre stage as the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, welcomed the Solar Energy Society of Nigeria (SESN) to discuss plans for the 43rd National Solar Energy Forum, scheduled for 21–23 October 2026 in Abuja.
The forum, themed “Bridging Nigerian Energy Gap, Accelerating Solar Energy Adoption for Sustainable Development,” will focus on key issues including renewable-energy financing, policy, local manufacturing, climate action, artificial intelligence, youth and women’s participation, green modernisation and rural electrification.
The meeting, led by AUST President, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, and SESN President, Dr Sunny Akpoyibo, centred on AUST’s proposed role as co-host of the national forum. SESN requested the University’s support with conference facilities, breakout rooms, security, catering, logistics and the formation of a joint Local Organising Committee.
Prof. Onwualu welcomed the proposed partnership, noting that the forum aligns with AUST’s strong foundation in engineering, energy research and innovation. He highlighted the University’s work in solar cells, batteries and energy technologies, as well as the role of AUSTInspire in supporting innovation, research commercialisation, startups and entrepreneurship.
AUST also highlighted its planned five-megawatt solar installation, being developed through an African Development Bank programme implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency. The project is expected to support the University’s energy needs, provide opportunities for practical student training and potentially supply excess power to neighbouring communities.
The forum is expected to provide a platform for researchers, industry professionals, investors, development partners and policymakers to exchange knowledge, showcase innovations and strengthen university-industry collaboration in the renewable-energy sector.
AUST management representatives at the meeting included Dr. Vitalis Anye, Dean, School of Engineering; Prof. Eli Jidere Bala, Head of Department, Petroleum and Energy Resources Engineering; Dr. Anthony Anyakora, Head, Consultancy Services; Mr Kingsley Ogwudu, Senior Manager, AUST Inspire; Mrs. Gloria Ajaegbu, Head, Multilateral Relations; Prince Obioha Atulomah, Head, Media Services and PR Unit; Mrs. Mozie Chidi, Administrative Assistant, School of Engineering; and Ms. Blessing Iweha, Administrative Assistant, Media Services and PR Unit.
The SESN delegation included Dr. Zarma Ismaila Haliru, Secretary-General; Amina A. Ibikunle; Engr. Shittu Suraj; Mr. Nafiu Tijjani, Public Relations Officer; Prof. Barnabas Ikyo Achakpa, NASENI Representative and NOC Member; Engr. Shurag Shittu Bamidele, Chairman, Youth Network Sub-Committee; and Engr. Mrs Toyin Alozie, Energy Commission of Nigeria representative and NOC Member.
Both parties expressed optimism about the collaboration and agreed to continue discussions towards successful delivery of the 43rd National Solar Energy Forum.
