A new partnership aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s solid-minerals sector has been established between the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, and Iron Ore Mining Ltd (IOML).
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on collaboration in mineral exploration, research, data analysis, artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) formalisation, capacity building, community development and sustainable mining practices.
The partnership will leverage AUST’s research expertise, particularly through the African Centre for Mineral Exploration and Development (ACMED), and IOML’s industry experience to support responsible mining and stronger collaboration among industry, academia, government, host communities and miners.
Under the agreement, both parties will undertake joint research and proposal development, develop training and capacity-building programmes, facilitate student internships and field studies, and promote innovation and knowledge exchange within the mining sector.
The partnership will also establish a Joint Steering Committee to provide strategic oversight, coordinate activities, monitor progress and facilitate engagement between both organisations.
Speaking during the signing, Dean, School of Engineering, Dr. Vitalis Anye, reaffirmed the University’s commitment to using research and innovation to address challenges in Nigeria’s mining sector. The collaboration is expected to contribute to sustainable mining practices, community development and improved compliance within the sector.
The MoU will provide a framework for developing subsequent definitive agreements detailing specific projects, responsibilities, financial commitments and other aspects of the partnership.
