Abuja, Nigeria – Team One, known as CaveMEN, has emerged as the winner of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) Innovation Hackathon, an initiative aimed at promoting entrepreneurship, digital innovation and practical problem-solving among students.

The competition, organised by the AUSTInspire Hub in partnership with the Nigeria Celebrates at 66 initiative, challenged students to develop innovative digital solutions capable of showcasing Nigerian talent on a national platform.

In his remarks, the President of AUST, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, encouraged all participants and reminded them that innovation thrives through collaboration, creativity and persistence. He commended the students for their commitment and ingenuity throughout the competition.

Announcing the results, Mrs Jennifer Chinyelu Obiasor, Coordinator of the Nigeria Celebrates at 66 programme, praised all participating teams for their creativity, dedication and ability to deliver impressive solutions within a limited timeframe. While Team One secured the top prize, Team Three was specially recognised for its strong potential and received a consolation award alongside other participating teams.

The hackathon forms part of AUST’s broader commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial talent and preparing students for emerging opportunities within the digital economy.

Mrs Obiasor also highlighted the transformative potential of blockchain technology, citing successful examples of its application in international financial transactions. She encouraged students, particularly those in computing and technology-related disciplines, to explore blockchain-based solutions and other emerging digital technologies capable of addressing real-world challenges.

Earlier, participants were tasked with designing a digital platform capable of showcasing creative talents across categories such as music, visual arts, fashion, photography and video production. The initiative is expected to contribute to activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary while providing young innovators with an opportunity to demonstrate their technical expertise and creativity.

Organisers confirmed that Team One’s winning project, CaveMEN, will undergo further development with support from programme coordinators ahead of a planned national rollout. Additional technical guidance and mentorship will be provided to ensure that the solution meets all project requirements and achieves its intended impact.
