Prof. Onwualu Harps On The Need For Strategic Polymer Utilization To Drive Nigeria's Economic Growth

Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, President of the African University of Science and Technology ( AUST ), Abuja has called for innovative solutions in polymer science and technology to address Nigeria's environmental challenges while boosting economic growth. He made this call while delivering a speech at the 2024 Conference of the Polymer Institute of Nigeria (PIN) held in Abuja. Prof. Onwualu unveiled the critical role that polymers play across multiple sectors and urged stakeholders to focus on responsible manufacturing and recycling practices. He highlighted the broad applications and importance of polymers in daily life.

Onwualu commended PIN's efforts in engaging the National Assembly on a bill to charter the institute, a step he believes will ensure a more sustainable approach to polymer usage in Nigeria. The bill recently passed through the Assembly and is presently awaiting presidential assent. In his words "Once enacted, this legislation will enable us to establish responsible standards for polymer production and use across industries" he enthused. He praised the government's push for compressed natural gas (CNG) as a move that aligns with the institute’s environmental goals, recognizing CNG's potential to revolutionize the transportation sector.

Prof. Onwualu expressed optimism that PIN’s collaboration with government agencies and other professional bodies will improve access to this cleaner energy source for all Nigerians. The AUST President dismissed calls for an outright ban on polymers, calling such measures as impracticable given polymers' widespread use, from textiles to medical equipment. “Polymer goes beyond plastic bags and buckets. They are integral to our clothes, shoes, and many everyday items. Banning them is utopian,” he remarked. Instead, he emphasized the importance of developing biodegradable polymers and eco-friendly alternatives, a focus area for scientists working with PIN. The conference, which has the theme " Artificial Intelligence in Polymer Science" also emphasized the need for Nigeria to adopt cutting-edge technologies in the sector. Prof. Onwualu concludes by saying that AI can play a pivotal role in efficient polymer production, which could help create job opportunities for the youth and recent graduates in polymer sciences if only we can properly harness these advancements, polymers can significantly contribute to our economy. Dr. Elizabeth Dashie, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, echoed Onwualu’s views, stating that "Polymer is everything, from engineering to the textile industry, oil and gas, it is the backbone of economic activity.
