Global Community Marks Autism Day As AUST Reaffirms Commitment to Autism Awareness and Inclusion

Abuja, Nigeria – April 2, 2025

The President of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu,FAS, has enjoined governments, corporate organizations and the civil society to create more awareness on the integration and inclusion of those with Autism problems.

Prof Onwualu made this call in his speech to mark the International day of Autism held on Wednesday, April 2, 2025.

He urged the global community to ensure equal opportunities for people suffering from Autism by highlighting the importance of awareness, inclusion, and research in supporting such individuals.

The AUST boss opined that Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),  is a neuro-developmental condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, influencing their communication,  interaction and learning.

According to him "while awareness has grown over the years, challenges such as stigmatization of those suffering ASD, limited access to specialized education, and inadequate support systems persist, particularly in Africa"

Onwualu therefore called for a change of attitude among  stakeholders maintaining that such people deserve equal or even more treatment and show of kindness by all.

He reaffirmed that AUST, as a leading institution in science and technology, is committed to advancing research and initiatives that enhance the quality of life for individuals with autism.

The university encourages the development of assistive technologies, inclusive learning environments, and community engagement programs aimed at fostering acceptance and support for neuro-diverse individuals.

As part of its dedication to inclusivity, AUST advocates for policies that ensure equal educational opportunities for neuro-diverse learners and promotes inter-disciplinary research that leverages artificial intelligence and digital tools to aid communication and learning for individuals with autism.

World Autism Awareness Day serves as a reminder that neuro-diversity is a strength, and with the right resources and support, individuals with autism can thrive in society.

AUST calls on policymakers, educators, and the general public to join efforts in creating a more inclusive world where everyone, regardless of neurodevelopmental differences, is given the opportunity to succeed.
