AUSTinspire, Family Joy, NCC Host Cybersecurity Awareness Seminar

Abuja, Nigeria — October 29, 2025:

The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), business incubation hub, Austinspire, in collaboration with Family Joy International and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) hosted a one-day cybersecurity awareness seminar.

The seminar was put together to enlighten students, staff, and the general public on the growing importance of cybersecurity and safe digital practices.

In his welcome address, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu,FAS, President of AUST, commended the initiative, describing it as timely and vital in an era where technology has become central to education, communication, and innovation.

He expressed his appreciation on the efforts by the NCC, the Nigeria Police Force, and Family Joy International in promoting digital safety.

“When I saw the request for a cybersecurity awareness program, I was excited as this aligns with our vision at AUST which is to produce scientists, engineers and administrators who are technologically grounded.

In his goodwill message, a representative of the Nigeria Police Force, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Omaka Udodinma of the Cybercrime Unit emphasized the need for constant vigilance against cyber threats.

He explained that cybercrime has become one of the fastest-growing crimes in Nigeria, often involving online fraud, cyberbullying, data theft, and ransomware attacks.

According to him “Every Nigerian youth interacts with the internet and our goal is to ensure they understand what is right and what is not hence this awareness campaign which is the first step toward prevention.”

Mr. Uche Ndubuisi, representing Family Joy International, gave an overview of the organization’s commitment to fostering a cyberspace where no one falls a victim. He thanked AUST and Austinspire for their collaboration and expressed the desire for continued partnerships in digital safety advocacy.

From the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mr. Yisa Braimoh highlighted the importance of empowering the youth and women in cybersecurity. He noted that technology is now the backbone of education and business, calling for more inclusivity and collaboration across government and industries to strengthen public awareness while building a shared digital culture.

An interactive session led by Miss Angel Chukwudi, a 200-level AUST student, engaged participants in discussions on their understanding of cybersecurity. This was followed by a panel session moderated by Mr. Kingsley Ogwudu, Austinspire Hub Manager, featuring insights from Dr. Felix Ale, Mr. Uche Ndubuisi, and Angel Chukwudi, . The panel explored topics such as youth innovation, data privacy, and the future of cybersecurity in Africa.
