The President, African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS has reiterated the commitment of AUST in utilizing innovations and technology in nation building.

He made this remark at the 64th pre-independence anniversary interactive session held at the university’s boardroom yesterday in Abuja.

Addressing the audience which includes captains of industry, policy makers, faculty, students and members of the general public , Prof. Onwualu identified the resilience and strength of the Nigerian people as the bedrock of the nation’s progress, despite decades of trials and challenges.

According to him “We are a nation blessed with vast natural and human resources, yet we continue to face challenges that hinder our full potentials"

Prof. Onwualu pointed out that unemployment, economic instability, insecurity and infrastructural gaps are bane to Nigeria’s economic growth but called on Nigerians not to lose hope rather to see the obstacles surmountable with time.

Reflecting on the federal government’s reform efforts under the present administration, Prof. Onwualu acknowledged that while the results have been met with mixed feelings, real changes take time in view of the complexity of Nigeria as a country.

He expressed his confidence that with persistence, transparency, and a focus on the common good, Nigeria can achieve the transformation it so desperately desires.

On education, the renowned university administrator pointed out the pivotal role of education in shaping the country’s future, noting AUST’s commitment to fostering world-class education through its project-based approach.

“Here at AUST, we believe that education and innovation are key to unlocking Nigeria’s potential. Our programs in engineering, computer science, management science, and basic sciences are designed to equip students with practical skills to address real-world problems” he added.

AUST’s Innovation Hub, according to Prof. Onwualu, is a critical platform for driving economic growth through entrepreneurship, creating jobs, and scaling startup businesses. Additionally, the university’s interdisciplinary programs promote collaboration across sectors, ensuring a holistic approach to solving Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, such as infrastructural development, energy, health, and agriculture.

Aligning with the federal government’s vision of fostering economic growth through innovation, Prof. Onwualu expressed pride in AUST’s role in supporting the National Innovation Entrepreneurship Ecosystem. He reiterated the university’s readiness to continue producing graduates who will drive clean-tech initiatives and deliver innovative solutions for national development.

As the nation celebrates its 64th independence anniversary, he urged Nigerians not to focus solely on the challenges facing them but also to recognize the immense potentials within the country and to play their part in nation-building, whether through entrepreneurship, scientific discovery, or public service, stressing that unity and dedication are crucial to achieving the Nigeria of everyone’s dreams.

“Each of us has a role to play and together we can build a brighter future, one where our nation stands tall among the global community.” he enthused

Prof. Onwualu wished all a happy 64th independence anniversary in continued peace, prosperity, and progress as the nation moves toward a brighter future.
