AUST Marks World Accounting Day with Pomp and Pageantry * President Onwualu Commends Accounting Officers for their unwavering professional Services.
The Bursary Department, in conjunction with the School of Accounting and the Internal Audit Unit of the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, marked this year’s World Accounting Day Celebrated on November 10th. in a remarkable celebration filled with reflections, goodwill messages, and inspiring addresses.
In his goodwill message, the President of AUST, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, commended the university’s accounting and finance professionals for their unwavering dedication to transparency and accountability. He described them as indispensable pillars sustaining the institution’s financial integrity.
“Your work sustains the financial health and credibility of our great institution. Continue to embody professionalism, transparency, and commitment to excellence,” Prof. Onwualu stated.
The Bursar, Mr. Ben Okonkwo, in his address, highlighted the historical importance of the day, which commemorates the 1494 publication of Luca Pacioli’s groundbreaking work on double-entry bookkeeping—the foundation of modern accounting. He described Pacioli as the “Father of Accounting” and reminded staff that they are custodians of a noble legacy spanning over five centuries.
“Pacioli’s legacy reminds us that we are guardians of financial integrity whose diligence sustains fiscal responsibility and stakeholder trust,” he said.
Mr. Okonkwo further encouraged staff to combine professional integrity with the academic excellence for which AUST is renowned, emphasizing that accuracy, transparency, and accountability must continue to define their work.
The Chief Internal Auditor, Mr. Augustine Ikeagwu, urged the finance team to uphold the university’s internal control systems at all times. He emphasized that adherence to ethical principles and accountability must remain central to all financial practices.
“Integrity should always be our watchword,” he advised.
In his remarks, the Head of the Accounting Department, Dr. Mohammed Abubakar Haruna, urged Accounting students to take pride in their chosen career path, reminding them that accountants play vital roles as “guardians of financial integrity” wherever they serve.
According to him “International Accounting Day is not only a celebration of our past but a reaffirmation of our commitment to excellence and ethical financial stewardship,” he remarked" he enthused.
The occasion was marked with funfair, camaraderie, and motivational messages to the Accounting students, accounting professionals and other guests as the university marks the enduring value of the accounting profession and its contribution to institutional growth and societal development.
