The African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja has reiterated its commitment to the development of sports not only in universities within Nigeria but the country as a whole.
The Acting President of AUST, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, made this known when the executive team from the Nigerian University Games Association paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Abuja.
Professor Onwualu stated that despite the fact that AUST’s academic standard is high, the university also ensures that its students participate actively in sports so as to inculcate in them discipline, good sportsmanship, physical training as well as create the opportunity for them to interact with other university students with diverse background.
He opined that the visit of the NUGA executives at this time the university has been licensed to run undergraduate programs was timely and a step in the right direction.
Professor Onwualu thanked the NUGA team for finding AUST worthy to join the sports body maintaining that the university would give the association all the support it needs to strive.
In his speech, the President of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Mr. Emeka Ogbu, thanked the AUST Acting President for the warm reception accorded to him and his team.
He stressed that their mission was to give the university anopportunity to participate in more than 17 sports that the association organizes thereby enhancing both the physical and mental capabilities of the students.
He pleaded with the AUST boss to formally register with the body as the derivable benefits are enormous.
The NUGA President was accompanied by the Secretary/Media Relations Officer, Ms. Chidiebere Ezeani while the Acting President, Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS; the Director Academic Planning, Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello; the Acting Head , Materials Science and Engineering department, Dr. Vitalis Anye; Acting Head, Pure and Applied Mathematics department, Dr. Usman Bello; Head, Media Services/Public Relations, Prince Obioha Atulomah; the Coordinator, Students Affairs, Mrs Nsima Joseph and the Personal Assistant to the Acting President/Budget Officer, Mr. Solomon Ibrahim received the visiting team from NUGA on behalf of AUST.
