AUST HOSTS WEBINAR ON ENERGY-EFFICIENT MINERAL EXTRACTION FOR AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the African University of Science and Technology (AUST), Abuja, hosted a webinar entitled "African Minerals, Materials Resources & Prosperity – From Problem Identification to Patentable Research Outcome"
The webinar attracted over 32 participants from across Africa and in the diaspora, including the academia and researchers from the United States of America (USA). Professor Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, the AUST President in his welcome address, underscores the significance of energy in the sustainable extraction and processing of minerals—a focal area in AUST's ongoing research efforts.
Professor Onwualu reiterated the institution's commitment to exploring energy-efficient practices as key to unlocking Africa’s mineral wealth in an environmentally sustainable manner. The webinar featured Dr. Samuel Olumide Ogunmodimu, an esteemed expert in energy and minerals engineering from Pennsylvania State University, USA.
Dr. Ogunmodimu, who holds both Nigerian heritage and Australian citizenship, highlighted the challenges and opportunities surrounding energy use in mineral extraction.
He noted that the crushing and grinding of minerals account for 30-40% of the energy consumed in the mineral extraction process.
He stressed the need for Africa to prioritize energy efficiency in mining practices to support global energy transition efforts and reduce environmental impact. The erudite scientist engaged participants in discussions about practical ways to implement energy-efficient practices in Nigeria's mining sector, including exploring alternative energy sources like geothermal power.
Dr. Ogunmodimi expressed eagerness for collaborative efforts to advance innovative mineral extraction solutions across Africa. The webinar which was co-sponsored by AfriMaterials & Ores Consults Ltd and DAF Minerals & Materials Research Group, demonstrated AUST’s growing influence in fostering sustainable mining practices.
This initiative marks a significant step toward African-led advancements in resource management and positions AUST as a hub for research-driven solutions to Africa’s mineral and energy challenges.
