AUST Becomes First Nigerian University to Deploy Fully Open-Source Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Abuja, Nigeria – 3rd September 2025– The African University of Science and Technology (AUST) has once again cemented its position as a technology trailblazer by becoming the first university in Nigeria to design and deploy a fully open-source Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI).
This landmark achievement transforms the way students, faculty, staff and researchers access computing resources — enabling secure, anytime-anywhere access to high-performance virtual desktops, laboratories and applications.
The AUST VDI offers, cost-effective virtualization – powered by open-source platforms, cutting costs while maintaining high performance level, enhanced learning experience – giving students access to remote laboratories and research tools from any device.
It also offers improved IT service delivery – ensuring better infrastructure resilience and operational efficiency, freedom from proprietary lock-in – eliminating reliance on costly commercial solutions.
