Prof. Soboyejo Speaks  On Materials for African Development As AUST Holds Webinar

On Wednesday, February 5th, the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) held a webinar series exploring how advancements in materials science can help tackle Africa's challenges in health, energy, and sustainability. The event brought together experts from the academia, industry, and government to discuss the latest developments and opportunities in the field.

Prof. Wole Soboyejo, former President of African University of Science and Technology ( AUST), Abuja and currently the  President of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, New York, USA, delivered the lecture. He unveiled the importance of teamwork and collaboration in driving innovation and development. Prof. Soboyejo highlighted how materials science can play a transformative role in creating targeted drugs, improving solar energy efficiency, and developing sustainable solutions for Africa's energy and environmental challenges.

One of the key topics discussed was a groundbreaking project at AUST focused on developing targeted cancer treatments using nanotechnology. Researchers are working on nanoparticles that can selectively target and destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. If successful, this approach could significantly improve cancer treatment by reducing side effects and increasing effectiveness, benefiting patients in Africa and beyond.

In addition to Prof. Soboyejo's insights, other experts explored complimentary topics, including the use of machine learning and simulation to design new materials, as well as the development of sustainable energy solutions tailored to Africa's needs. These discussions highlighted the critical role of advanced materials in driving technological progress and economic growth across the continent.

In his  remarks, AUST President, Prof. Peter Azikiwe Onwualu, FAS, stressed on the importance of materials science in shaping Africa's future. He noted that despite Africa's rich natural resources, limited local manufacturing and processing capabilities hinder their full economic potential. He urged greater investment in research, innovation, and industrial capacity to turn raw materials into high-value products that drive sustainable development.

The webinar was part of AUST on going efforts to promote innovation and development in Africa through materials science and engineering. By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and government, the event brought to the fore the vital role of science and technology in addressing Africa's most pressing challenges.
