AUST Holds 2nd SIWES Program for Students

On February 19, 2025, the African University of Science and Technology (AUST) hosted a Students' Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) program for its students. Dr. Bala, SIWES Coordinator, welcomed the students, emphasizing the importance of practical experience in complementing theoretical knowledge.
In his keynote address, AUST President Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAS, stressed the need for students to combine technical skills with soft skills. He encouraged students to leverage the university's resources, including online internship opportunities, to gain hands-on experience.
Prof. Onwualu noted that AUST's goal is to provide students with comprehensive training, empowering them to succeed in the real world. He urged students to be proactive, engage in extracurricular activities, and capitalize on opportunities beyond the classroom.
Dr. Damilola Abraham, an experienced SIWES supervisor, provided guidance on maintaining a logbook and technical report. She emphasized the importance of good behavior, punctuality, and attention to detail in presenting reports and defending projects.
Dr. Abdulhakeem Bello, the university's Director for Academic Programs (DAP) encouraged the students to approach their SIWES experience with seriousness, highlighting the value of punctuality and responsible behavior.
The Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering, Dr. David Afolayan, shared his personal experience as an intern and advised students to apply the knowledge gained during SIWES to real-life situations.
The SIWES program aims to equip students with practical work experience, enabling them to develop essential skills and competencies for success in their chosen careers.
